At just 14 years old, Alejandro Garcia Leon is a formidable presence both on and off the soccer field. A 9th grader at Central Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon, Alejandro epitomizes the definition of a student-athlete through his dedication to academics, physical fitness, and his unwavering passion for soccer. His aspirations are as lofty as they are impressive; he aims to earn a college degree in business, eventually play professionally, and perhaps one day start his own business.
A Solid Foundation in Soccer
Alejandro’s soccer journey began nearly a decade ago, during which he has honed his skills through nine years of club soccer. Currently playing as a left outside back for the FC Portland Academy, he has witnessed significant growth within his club, which has now transitioned fully into the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) and ECNL Regional League (RL), competing in the newly established ECNL Far West Conference.
One of the impressive highlights of his journey was his participation in the Oregon State Cup, an experience that shaped not only his skills, but also his love for teamwork and competition. His commitment to excellence is evident in the fact that Alejandro recently finished his inaugural season of high school soccer on the Central Catholic’s 6A JV2 team, where the team boasted an undefeated record.
Competitive Edge Through Experience
Playing at a competitive level involves more than just showing up for practice; it’s about pushing oneself and seizing opportunities. Alejandro has played in over 32 tournaments at various levels, showcasing his talent in local, state, national, and international competitions. Notable events include prestigious tournaments such as the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup, Surf Cup Northwest, and ODP Friendship Cup, among three Oregon State Cups.
His international experience culminated in an exciting trip to England in 2024 with his ODP (Olympic Development Program) team, where they faced formidable opponents including West Ham United’s U14s and Tranmere Rovers’ U15s. The highlight of this tour was their victory in a small-sided tournament in West London, further solidifying Alejandro’s resilience and skill as an athlete.
Embracing New Challenges
This past summer marked a significant milestone in Alejandro’s soccer journey as he attended his first college ID camp at the University of Portland—a Division 1 school. Despite being one of the youngest participants, Alejandro thrived amidst older competitors, showcasing his tenacity and determination to improve. The invaluable feedback from coaches fueled his ambition to continue pushing his limits.
In the coming months, Alejandro has several more ID camps lined up: the X1 Showcase Camp in Portland, the Alliance Showcase in both Portland and Vancouver, the College Prospect ID Camp in Forest Grove, and the ECNL Showcase in Las Vegas. Such experiences not only allow him to showcase his abilities but also deepen his understanding of the game.
Educational Aspirations
Beyond soccer, Alejandro maintains his focus on academics, aiming for a bachelor’s degree in business or marketing.
